Equestrian Requirements

The following items are essential for students participating in the Equine programme. All items must be clearly and permanently marked with the student’s name.

  • Riding helmet – current ASA 3838.
  • Riding boots, smooth sole – a heel and elastic sides. Work boots are not acceptable for riding but may be used around the stables.
  • Rain coat.
  • Gloves – for riding in cold weather, or when the reins become sweaty in hot weather.
  • Hat or cap – for sun and rain protection.
  • Riding pants – comfortable, long pants eg jodhpurs, jeans, track pants NB: shorts are NOT allowed when riding, including bareback.
  • Riding tops must have sleeves which cover at least the shoulders. A collar provides good protection from the sun.
  • Hair bands for students with long hair.
NB: Safety standard approved helmets are compulsory for all students when riding at NEGS Equestrian Centre. Students are encouraged to provide their own helmet for personal hygiene reasons. Several helmets are provided for day students and those students who are starting riding and are unsure if they will continue.


The following is a list of essential items that are required if you are bringing your horse to NEGS Equestrian Centre. Each item must be clearly and permanently marked with the student’s name.

  • A horse in good health with its
    • Tetanus and Strangles vaccinations commenced
    • Veterinarian health certificate
  • Headstall and lead rope
  • Two day rugs, unlined rain sheet, heavy rugs for winter
  • Saddle
  • 2 x saddle cloths
  • Bridle – snaffle
  • Container for grooming kit eg. bag, tool box
  • Grooming kit items
    • Body brush (soft bristles)
    • Dandy brush (hard bristles)
    • Rubber curry comb
    • Hoof pick
    • Bot knife
    • 2 x towels
    • Scraper
    • Mane comb
    • Sponge
    • Scissors
    • Hoof dressing (oil)
    • Hoof dressing applicator (brush)
  • Container for First Aid Kit – NB: this container with its contents should be kept in an easily accessible place in the car whenever transporting your horse and then be left at school for use on your horse.

      • Roll of cotton wool
      • 2 x crepe bandages approx. 7.5m
      • An elastoplast bandage
      • A self adhesive bandage eg. Coplus or coplast bandage
      • Antiseptic cream or spray
      • Disinfectant solution
      • Small container for mixing disinfectant solution
      • Gauze or melanin for covering wound
      • A pair of round-ended scissors
  • Spare headstall
  • Spare lead rope
  • Riding whip – even if you don’t use one
  • Feed container
  • Water bucket
  • Hay net or bag
  • Washing powder for horse equipment
  • Tack cleaning equipment
    • Saddle soap
    • Leather cream
    • Saddle soap cloth
    • Leather cream cloth
    • Container for water
  • Storage container for many of the above items
